[it took a little creativity, and maybe even a little finagling, to find a way to carry around a lot of water inconspicuously, so he didn't stick out like a chump begging to be robbed.]

[okay, no, he just carries bottles around instead of a giant jug. but this would still be a lot easier if he had access to his usual way of lugging stuff around. the usual way involves hammerspace.]

[but anyway, he stops in his tracks when he hears a familiar voice calling out his name, and he turns in her direction, one hand lifted in a casual greeting, the other instinctively reaching for one of the aforementioned bottles of water. just in case.]

You could say that.

[that's not suspicious at all, Dave. but he accepts her invitation, and plops himself down on the blanket.]

What about you? Gonna guess you're on Round Whatever of singing.

Yeah, it's like round twenty-something. So I'm taking a breather.

[ overheating would be bad. ]

I hope you're not meanin' that's round twenty-something today.

[that is a lot of free concerts?? it also prompts him to pull out a water bottle and roll it in her direction.]

No, today is just like round four.

[ but she'll gratefully take a bottle with a gusty sigh anyway. ]

You really don't mind doing it for free?

No, not really. I still get plenty of tips, but it's just nice to be cheered for.

[he thinks about that for a minute, though his expression is largely indiscernible. he does think that's kind of nice? not everyone has the sort of passion that leads a person to four rounds of singing for free, for the fun of it, in the blistering heat.]

Do you write your own stuff, too?

Not all of it. If the agency doesn't do the lyrics, then I'll work on them with the other four girls.

Nah, British. They all had their own nicknames, too.

Like Sportsball Spice, and High Heels Spice, and, uh. Extra British Spice.

... I can't say we've got our own nicknames like that, but if they're a girl group, I guess that part's close enough?

It's never too late to come up with nicknames. I'll help, even.

Do you all have your own themes or what? Like how Sportsball Spice is into the sportsball.

Ummm... not really? We specialize in different things, though? As idols, I mean.

[oculusriffs]

I don't really get what that means. What are idol things?

[flyingsolos]

Things you do as a representative for your agency-- for example, Reika's incredible at modeling, and Haruna's a really good actress. Being an idol doesn't just mean singing on a stage.

[oculusriffs]

[that's not too different, and yet still pretty different somehow, from what he understands about how music groups operate in America. not that Dave ever particularly paid them much attention — he just listens to music he thinks sounds good, and ignores any Backstreet Boys vs. NSync political intrigue that gets cooked up alongside it.]

[but, now they're getting somewhere. they are one step closer to a nickname. and he can't help but notice she's left out a detail, here.]

Makes sense. So, Reika does modeling, Haruna does acting, and Rion...

[maybe not right this second, though. right now, Dave is interested in pulling out another bottle of water and leaning forward so he can pour just a tiny bit over the back of his neck. god, it's even worse out here than it ever was in Houston.]
